Nizhny Novgorod is a port situated at the confluence of
the Volga and Oka Rivers, 400 km to the east of Moscow.
The city was founded in 1221. It was a major commercial centre
of Russia.
There are numerous places of interest, such as the Kremlin (built
in 1500-1511), the Annunciation Monastery (1649) and the Archangel
Cathedral (1631). The collection of the city's Art Museum contains
pictures by Russian artists of different periods and is one
of the best in Russia.
UNESCO has placed Nizhny Novgorod was among the 100 cities of
the world representing international historical and cultural
value.
